Reflections On The Ted Quinlan Master Class – June 2014
I have said it before and now I get to say it again, Ted Quinlan is one amazing jazz guitarist and teacher. In June he conducted a master class for The KW Guitar Society and it was a profound learning experience for everyone in the room.
We were amazed that in a short period of time Ted could assess a guitarists playing and find something specific to work on.
The class was so successful, we hope to make it an annual event!
Here are some quotes with pictures:
1. “Everything comes down to fingering, jazz guitar playing can be so complex, so let’s find the easiest fingering possible”.
2. “Learn to take the risk to sound bad, before you sound good”.
3. “Be ridiculously patient, because it is much easier to play it right the first time, then to unlearn something and if you get too frustrated, take a break”.
4. “A quiet dynamic can help give you a lot of freedom in your playing to help create melodies”.
5. “Practicing one string solos will help you hear and visualize a melodic approach”.
