Bob Egan of Blue Rodeo writes…….

I’ve played pedal steel guitar for 35 years now and the one thing that hasn’t ever gone away is my quest for tone.  Tone is what I am passionate about.  Over the years I’ve played live through a Super Reverb, a Bassman, a Bandmaster, a Pro Junior, an AC30, an AC15, a Reverb-o-rocket, a B15 fliptop, a Dirt Road Special plus a whole whack of Peavy’s – the Session 400, the Nashville 400 and the L.A. 400.

I don’t play in traditional country bands so I have to think about tone like a guitar player or a keyboard player or a string or horn section.  The crystal clear Nashville tone would sound out of place in my gig, it wouldn’t be organic enough.  I need to use a tube amp.

For this tour I turned to one of the greatest tube amps for guitar, the Fender Deluxe Reverb.  Since we are all on in-ear monitors now I don’t have to get my stage level up over the Hammond or the drums.  All I have to do is get a killer tone and our front-of-house tech, Rich, has me covered.  It’s awesome.  I set the Deluxe at 3.5 for a full clean tone.  When I drive the front end with my volume pedal or compressor or chorus (yes, a chorus pedal!) I can get the tubes to sing and sustain and distort really warmly – cello tones, blues tones, David Lindley tones.

It is funny….you spend 35 years looking for that tone and its been right there in front of you the whole time.

The KW Guitar Society is pleased to announce the addition of Bob Egan writing posts for us.  Between tours he is in town running Bob”s Guitar Service and I feel KW is lucky to have him here.

The first time I walked into the shop it had a great artistic vibe,  like the work ethic of musicians and guitar lovers all gathering around sharing their dedication, interest and passions…. very cool place!!!
